When this came out this was an extremely high end product and cost a fair amount of money. As time has gone on the drone has dropped in price by a rather large amount and is now one of the most affordable drones on the market.
The 3DR was designed to be completely beginner friendly and to allow the pilot to record some aerial videos with ease. 3DR definitely succeeded in doing this. I was quickly able to get the hang of flying the drone even though I had only flown a handful of times in the pat. The 3DR requires an action camera to be attached, which in my opinion is both a good and bad thing. If you already have an action camera such as a Go Pro this is fantastic as you’re able to record some fantastic looking aerial footage very affordably. However, if you have to buy a Go Pro alongside the drone it can easily become pretty expensive. One good thing about this concept is that you’re not limited to what camera you use and you’re unable to continually upgrade without having to buy a new drone. If you had a DJI drone for example, you would need to buy a new quad copter every time you wanted a camera upgrade. With the 3DR you have a drone for life that you can continue to upgrade as you get better cameras. The 3DR has a respectable flight time of 20 minutes and can reach a maximum range of 800m. These specifications are fantastic for the price you are paying and allow you to fully enjoy your time in the air. The drone has a number of automatic flight modes that make piloting the aircraft very beginner friendly. For example, the drones’ one button take off and landing feature takes the responsibility of doing this out of the pilot’s hand. When the drone takes off it will remember where it is and will return there at a push of a button. Once in the air you can fly your drone using the controllers, or make use of its other automatic flight modes, which include follow me, waypoints, cable cam and orbit. When you perform one of these flight modes, the drone will automatically carry out predetermined manoeuvres that record cinematic looking footage. To round up, I would say if you have an action camera and want to get a drone then the 3DR is a great way to get started. If you don’t have an action camera and have to buy one, it can make it pretty expensive so that’s up to you J Thanks for reading.
